Sign Squad
Sign Squad is a group of volunteers drawn from our membership who bring ProWo’s pro-democracy message to the public square.
Begun in 2025 as a response to the Trump administration’s chilling act of censoring over 350 words and phrases from the federal government’s websites, signage, and contracts and proposals process, Sign Squad has evolved to encompass several different formats and themes.
Our demonstrations always incorporate signs that convey clear messaging, sometimes with vocal amplification and a call-and-response format involving supporters and bystanders.
Themes include Words That Matter: The Vocabulary of Democracy, ABOLISH ICE: Say Their Names, and Signs of Fascism. Words That Matter can be tailored to focus on specific topics like Civil Rights, Reproductive Rights, Science and Medicine, LGBTQ+ Issues, and Environmental Justice.
Sign Squad has participated in all the Indivisible CT Hands Off and No Kings rallies at the State Capitol in Hartford, in demonstrations involving a coalition of like-minded pro-democracy groups, in protests in front of ICE headquarters in Hartford, in scheduled appearances at West Hartford’s Blue Back Square, and in community-wide events like Celebrate West Hartford and West Hartford Pride Festival.

To date about 20 percent of ProWo’s membership have taken part in one or more Sign Squad demonstrations. Regulars find it’s a great way to educate the public, meet fellow activists, build solidarity, and have some fun.
